Description
Biogas typically refers to a gas produced by the biological breakdown of organic
matter in the absence of oxygen. Biogas is comprised primarily of methane
and carbon dioxide. It originates from biogenic material and is a type of
biofuel. Biogas is a product of the anaerobic digestion or fermentation of
biodegradable materials such as manure, sewage, municipal waste, and energy
crops. Other types of biogas include wood gas which is created by gasification
of wood or other biomass.
The Status Scientific Controls Mentor portable gas detector type PGD2 is an intrinsically safe portable multi-gas instrument for use in Group IIC potentially explosive atmospheres. Click here for further details of the general description of the PGD2.
The Biogas version is fitted with special software for the measurement of the methane content in BioGas by volume and it also includes a mode for measurement of gases during Nitrogen Purging of tanks or other vessels.
Using the menu key, the user can select the BioGas instrument to operate in either of three separate operating modes:-
1. Measurement of BioGas (Methane in Carbon Dioxide by volume) and Oxygen
Biogas is normally comprised primarily of methane and carbon dioxide with a small level of oxygen. If the oxygen and methane are subtracted from one hundred (full-scale) the balance is considered to be carbon dioxide.
If the methane and carbon dioxide mixture is burnt for either heating purposes or to provide electrical power, it is necessary to monitor the ratio of the two gases before combustion. The scaling for methane with a balance of carbon dioxide is automatically adjusted to give correct readings.
2. The purging of tanks with Nitrogen for safe entry. (Methane in Nitrogen below 1% volume and Oxygen below 0.5% volume)
In this mode the instrument is used for measurement of the methane level in containers such as tanks or gas pipe installations that have been purged with nitrogen in preparation for entry of personnel who are to carry out cleaning or other maintenance work within a confined and potentially hazardous space.
The instrument is fitted with dual flammable sensors, one covering the range 0-5% Methane and the other covering the range 0-100% methane. Their operation is automatically controlled by the software in order to scale the methane readings correctly where the balance gas is nitrogen.
3. Standard gas detection applications (Methane, Oxygen and optionally Toxic)
If neither of the above two modes are required, the instrument can be selected to function as a normal two or three gas detector depending upon the sensor types fitted.

This probe is for use with the Biogas version of Portable Gas Detector. It consists of a conical steel probe, filter, tubing and pressure regulator/adaptor which fit into the gas sensor inlet of the instrument. The probe fits into the wall of the Biogas vessel and relies upon the internal pressure within the vessel to force the sample into the gas detector inlet. The pressure regulator can be used to adjust the pressure in order to prevent over pressurisation of the gas sensors which could otherwise cause erroneous readings.
